Policy

A worker may require a special apparatus or have special needs as a result of sustaining a compensable injury.

Exceptions to the preceding criteria will be considered on an individual basis.

Guidelines

Glove for an artificial hand

When a worker is required to wear an artificial hand as a result of an injury, the glove worn is considered as part of the artificial hand.

The WSIB may authorize 3 gloves for the artificial hand and 1 glove for the natural hand every 12 months. After the first supply, additional gloves are to be provided only upon request.

MedicAlert bracelet(s)

MedicAlert bracelet(s) are available to workers who have a condition directly related to a compensable accident and would benefit from this service.

Stump socks

A worker who is required to wear one or more artificial appliances because of an amputation caused by the compensable injury is entitled to the provision of up to 12 socks for each amputation stump during any 12 month period.

Orthopaedic shoes

Where it is necessary to supply an orthopaedic shoe to a worker, 2 pair may be supplied so that there can be a change of shoes.

The WSIB may authorize oversize shoes if they are required temporarily.
