Why join the Health and Safety Excellence program?

Our Health and Safety Excellence program helps you make your workplace safer, while earning rebates on your WSIB premiums. Through our program, you can:

  • Reduce the risk of injuries and illnesses, and lessen the impact on your business when they do occur
  • Improve your business’s reputation by showing your commitment to health and safety
  • Boost employee confidence, morale and productivity

And if you’re a smaller business (1-99 full-time employees), you can earn double the rebates on your annual WSIB premiums, plus $1,000 toward your health and safety plan, this year.

No matter the size of your business – whether you're just getting started or want to build on safety practices you already have in place – one of our WSIB-approved program providers will help you every step of the way.

The WSIB’s Health and Safety Excellence program helps you develop an internal culture that respects and prioritizes health and safety. We received immeasurable assistance from our program provider that helped us create a safer workplace.

Program at a glance

A WSIB-approved program provider will help you develop a health and safety action plan based on different focus areas, known as program topics, such as controlling a hazard and emergency preparation.

The program has three levels – foundation, intermediate and advanced. There are 39 topics spread across the three levels.

The bottom step is the foundation level that has 13 topics, the middle step is the intermediate level that has 17 topics and the top step is the advanced level that has nine topics. Beside all of the steps are the words "validation," "health and safety services," and "financial and non-financial supports." There is also an upward facing arrow that runs alongside all of the steps. At the bottom of the arrow underneath

You can start the enrolment process by choosing a program provider or speaking with one of our program consultants about your unique business needs.

You must have an active WSIB account and at least one full-time employee to participate in the program.

Calculate your estimated rebates

The amount you receive in rebates from the program depends on how many health and safety topics you complete, the size of your business and your WSIB premiums for the previous year.

Businesses can choose to complete up to five topics in their health and safety action plan and will typically receive a minimum rebate of $1,000 up to a maximum of $50,000 per completed topic. Please note though, that the most you'll receive in rebates, regardless of how many topics you complete, is equal to the amount of your WSIB premiums the previous year. For example, if a business completes five topics but their premiums were $4,000 last year, they would earn a rebate of $4,000.

However, smaller businesses (1-99 full-time employees) can earn double the health and safety rebates, plus $1,000 for their health and safety plan, this year. So, that small business that would normally only be eligible for up to $4,000 is now able to earn up to $9,000 - up to $8,000 in rebates, plus the additional $1,000 for their health and safety plan.
