Return-to-Work Specialist

Purpose in action

When a workplace injury happens, people need clarity, support, and a plan. Return-to-Work Specialists help make that happen.

You’ll often be the one coordinating conversations that move things forward, from conversations about modified duties to resolving questions about what’s safe, realistic, and fair. This role blends fieldwork with case planning, and you’ll be a key player in bringing people together at a challenging time.

What you'll do

As a Return-to-Work Specialist, you’ll often be the face of the WSIB, working directly with injured people, employers, service providers, and their representatives to help people get back on the job safely and in a sustainable way.

Some days you’ll be out on the road meeting with people, and other days, you’ll be documenting meetings and progress, and planning next steps. Every day is different, and you’ll encounter new workplaces, industries, and return-to-work scenarios every day.

You’ll lead return-to-work planning, meeting with both injured people and employers to explore modified duties, discuss workplace accommodations, and problem-solve together. Strong observation and communication skills are essential, especially when helping people navigate unfamiliar or complex situations.

What you'll need to succeed

You’ll need a background in disability management, occupational health, or a related field, along with strong communication and problem-solving skills. You should be comfortable working with both injured people and employers, often in complex or unfamiliar situations.

A Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) designation is preferred, however, if you don’t have it, you can complete CDMP training within the first three years in the role. A valid G class driver’s license is also needed for travel.

"The work we do matters. I’m a Return-to-Work Specialist and I help people who have been affected by a work-related injury or illness get back to work in a healthy and safe way."

Growth and development

The WSIB values the expertise Return-to-Work Specialists bring to the table. You’ll be part of a supportive team, with easy access to your manager and peers, and a culture that encourages collaboration through challenging cases.

You’ll have access to ongoing development opportunities, including the Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) certification, which is a requirement for the role (and can be completed within your first three years if you don’t already have it).

This is a specialized role with a clear path for growth and impact, backed by thorough onboarding, training, and peer support.

Employees also have access to 1-on-1 and specialty coaching, along with science-backed resources that support personal and professional growth. These tools are designed to help employees thrive in all areas of life — not just at work, but as whole people.

Benefits

The WSIB offers a strong benefits package that begins on your first day of employment. Employees and their eligible dependents receive extended coverage that goes well beyond the basics — including dental care, vision care with eyeglasses, and prescription drug plans.

One example of this commitment is our mental health coverage. Unlike most employers, the WSIB provides unlimited coverage for mental health services with 100% reimbursement. This support is available year-round and extends to eligible dependents, helping ensure that employees and their families can get the care they need, whenever they need it.

Making a difference in our communities

We believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work. Whether it’s through donations, volunteering, or supporting local causes, our goal is to create a safer, healthier world.

One example is our support for the Steps for Life campaign. The campaign supports families affected by workplace tragedies — a mission that reflects our values and the work we do every day.
