Nurse Consultant

Purpose in action

Your input will make a real difference. Whether you’re reviewing a treatment plan, identifying issues that could delay recovery, or guiding health care providers, your clinical perspective will help ensure the right care decisions are made at the right time.

You’ll be supporting both injured people and internal teams, using your voice to influence outcomes and help avoid long-term complications. You won’t be managing claims directly, but your clinical insight will be key to how cases move forward. The Nurse Consultant role is unique; you’ll use the clinical judgement skills you depend on in a healthcare setting with public service. People in this role not only provide care, stability, and support, they also receive care, stability, and support from the strong team they have around them.

What you'll do

As a Nurse Consultant at the WSIB, you’ll use your clinical background in a different way; one that’s focused on collaboration, problem-solving, and real-world impacts.

Most days will start with independent work, like reviewing medications, treatment updates, or health documentation. But there’s no such thing as a “typical” day. You’ll work closely with a small team that includes a Case Manager and Occupational Therapist to guide each file forward.

It will be your job to make sense of complex medical information, provide clear clinical guidance, and help remove the barriers that can stall recovery. You’ll interpret clinical findings, offer recommendations, and act as a subject-matter expert to support fair, medically-informed case decisions. You’ll support people through vulnerable points in their lives, and the difference you’ll make is real.

What you'll need to succeed

You’ll need to be a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. A background in acute care, community health, or occupational health is preferred, along with at least three years of relevant clinical experience.

You’ll also need to be comfortable working independently, interpreting complex medical information, and communicating with both internal teams and external health care providers. Keen attention to detail, strong written documentation skills, and sound clinical judgment are essential.

Growth and development

Nurse Consultants at the WSIB are respected for their experience and supported in their development. You’ll be part of a collaborative, knowledge-driven environment with access to regular clinical education, peer learning, and internal forums.

You’ll have a thorough onboarding period and ongoing learning opportunities to help you grow within a specialized, consultative nursing role.

Over time, many Nurse Consultants move into leadership, mentoring, or specialized advisory positions. Whether you’re looking to deepen your impact or take your next step, there’s room to grow at the WSIB.

Employees also have access to 1-on-1 and specialty coaching, along with science-backed resources that support personal and professional growth. These tools are designed to help employees thrive in all areas of life — not just at work, but as whole people.

Benefits

The WSIB offers a strong benefits package that begins on your first day of employment. Employees and their eligible dependents receive extended coverage that goes well beyond the basics — including dental care, vision care with eyeglasses, and prescription drug plans.

One example of this commitment is our mental health coverage. Unlike most employers, the WSIB provides unlimited coverage for mental health services with 100% reimbursement. This support is available year-round and extends to eligible dependents, helping ensure that employees and their families can get the care they need, whenever they need it.
