How to register your business

Most Ontario businesses that have employees (including family members and sub-contractors) must register with us. We provide workplace insurance to 16 diverse industries and cover more than 300,000 businesses.

You have 10 calendar days to register with us from the day you hire your first employee.

Register your business

Registering your business is quick and easy – it only takes 10 minutes!

To get started:

  1. Gather the information you'll need to register your business
  2. Answer a few questions about your business and select your business activity

Then, we’ll confirm if you need to register and your next steps.

Not sure if you need to register?

Businesses in certain industries must register with us, including:

  • construction businesses
  • restaurants or bars
  • sales and services, agriculture or manufacturing businesses
  • trucking or transportation businesses
  • a homeowner or private resident hiring a domestic employee, such as a babysitter, nanny, cook, gardener, handy person, housekeeper, etc.

Some businesses in certain industries don’t have to register with us but can choose to get WSIB coverage for their employees, including:

  • banks, trusts and insurance companies
  • trade unions
  • private day cares
  • travel agencies
  • photography businesses
  • barber shops and many hair salons
  • funeral or embalming establishments

If your business doesn’t need to register, you can still apply for WSIB coverage for your employees if you want. Simply complete the registration submission to request a quote.

If your business or type of work isn’t listed, please answer a few questions about your business and select your business activity to determine your registration obligation.

Business owners (whether you’re a sole proprietor, partner or executive officer) who aren’t in the construction industry aren’t automatically covered by us. However, you can request optional WSIB insurance.

Construction businesses

Your registration obligation may differ if you own or operate a business in construction. You can read about expanded compulsory coverage in the construction industry for more details.

Independent operators

You don’t need to register with us if you’re an independent operator working outside of the construction industry.

You can complete a questionnaire to confirm your status as an independent operator if a business who hired you needs confirmation of their responsibility to report and pay WSIB premiums.

You can also request a tender letter if you don’t have any employees, don’t meet the registration requirements and are bidding on a job.
