FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions about the Health and Safety Excellence program:

What is the new Health and Safety Excellence program?

It is a voluntary incentive program connecting businesses of all sizes with WSIB-approved providers to improve the health and safety of their workplaces. Schedule 1 businesses demonstrating improvement can receive recognition and a rebate on their WSIB premiums. Schedule 2 employers will not receive rebates but will get public recognition and over time should see a decrease in claim costs for their investment in health and safety.

Why is the WSIB changing its health and safety programs?

The new program expands service and delivery options, making it accessible to more employers across Ontario. It integrates the Small Business, Workwell and Safety Groups programs into a single health and safety program that encourages continuous improvement. The new program is now open for enrolment for the 2020 program year.

What are the benefits of participating in the new program?

The program provides businesses with support to make improvements in the workplace, leading to better health and safety performance, which could result in lower premium rates, a rebate and recognition.

How does the new program work?

Join - businesses select a WSIB-approved provider to work with, complete an assessment to help determine where they should start in their health and safety journey and develop an action plan to work on health and safety topics of their choice.

Develop - learn how to complete topics with the help of a provider.

Demonstrate - submit evidence of topic completion for review by a WSIB validator.

Achieve - receive a rebate on their WSIB premiums and other recognition, such as digital achievement badges.

Who is eligible to participate in the new program?

All Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 businesses with an active WSIB account number are eligible to participate. Specific program criteria is available in the program guidelines.

Schedule 2 employers can participate in the program (i.e., develop an action plan and receive validation on topics completed) however will not receive a financial rebate as they do not pay premiums. Schedule 2 employers can receive non-financial recognition for their achievements (i.e., topics and levels they complete).

How does a business sign up?

To sign up, a business should:

  • attend an information session to learn about the program
  • review the list of approved providers
  • choose a provider and register in the program

Businesses can join the program anytime throughout the year, but some providers may offer services that run on an annual schedule with a specific entry period.

What is a provider and how does a business select one?

Providers are private health and safety companies and health and safety associations approved by the WSIB to deliver the program to support workplaces to improve their health and safety. You can find a list of approved providers and information on how to select the appropriate provider based on key factors including a business’s location and industry.
