Policy
The WSIB provides chaperones for injured workers who are required to undress for exams by medical consultants. Chaperones must be WSIB employees or under contract with the WSIB.
Guidelines
Medical consultants inform workers of the WSIB's policy on chaperones. If a worker does not agree to a chaperone, the medical consultant decides whether to proceed with the exam.
If possible, the WSIB provides a chaperone of the same gender as the injured worker. When this is not possible, and the worker does not object, a person of the opposite gender may chaperone the exam.
In some cases a relative, friend, or representative of the injured worker may be present during an exam. The WSIB does not consider these individuals to be chaperones.
The WSIB-appointed chaperone must sign a statement confirming the exam was suitable.
Application date
This policy applies to all medical exams performed on or after July 1, 1999, for all accidents.
