Compass is our online health and safety tool. For the first time, Ontarians can find and compare health and safety statistics for workplaces across the province. This is one more way that we are making our data open and easy to access.
Using Compass, anyone can:
- see the number and types of injuries in a workplace;
- get a sense of how serious those injuries were by looking at how many people were off work past the day of an accident and how many people are still receiving benefits a year after an accident.
The tool brings greater transparency to workplace safety in Ontario, giving people the ability to find health and safety statistics for any workplace and compare statistics between businesses.
Compass and workplace health and safety
The first phase of Compass allows anyone to shine a light on the health and safety record of Ontario’s workplaces. It can compare businesses by sector or rate group by:
- lost time injury rates,
- leading part of body injured statistics, and
- lost time claims receiving wage loss benefits at one year.
This data can be used by businesses to take steps to a safer workplace, while future phases will give businesses even more information that can help them make decisions to make workplaces safer.
Any business that had coverage with us from 2012 to 2016 will be included in Compass. Businesses that had no injury or illness claims during that time will still appear on Compass but without any statistics.
Open Data Directive
Compass is one more way we will be making our workplace data open and accessible. Our efforts are part of a larger initiative, the Province of Ontario’s Open Data Directive. The directive is intended to enhance the way citizens obtain, view and understand our data. We take the privacy of people very seriously. We do not release personal information and we follow the principles laid out in the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. We make every effort to protect confidentiality in the disclosure of our data while supporting the Open Data Directive’s open by default approach.
